Way Down Now - World Party, 1990
Inside my TV eye Anything but this Something new. Something true... |
After quitting the Waterboys in 1985, Welch musician Karl Wallinger formed what amounted to a solo act that he named World Party. His interest in eco-politics, and varying forms of music were the concept for the project. Heavily influenced by 'British Invasion' bands like the Beatles and Rolling Stones, his music can be described as Pop, Rock, Funk, Soul and Reggie; with 'sampled' bits from other artists as part of the re-cycled, or 'green' feeling.World Party's first album, Private Revolution, contained a minor hit named Ship of Fools. This went to #4 on the Australian charts in 1987. It wasn't until the 1990 release of Way Down Now from Goodbye Jumbo, that Karl Wallinger's one man show gained international attention. This single reached #1 on the US Modern Rock Chart. True to his re-cycled form, Way Down Now contains borrow bits from the Stones Sympathy for the Devil - Stones fans should listen carefully for the 'whoo whoo' near the end of the song.In 2000, Karl suffered an aneurysm, and was unable to speak. After six years of rehabilitation, he re-entered the business with Big Blue Ball, a project shared with Peter Gabriel and Stephen Hague. In 2007, he delighted his original fans with a live tour of Australia.
