Two For The Show - Trooper, 1976

Two for the show
And my mother wants to go
It'll break her heart when I tell her
She's too old

I'm in my place
I got makeup all over my face
I think I know my lines
But I dunno

One for the money
Two for the show
Three for the lady on the radio
Four might be the one
You'll never know, you'll never know
If only there was a better way to go (way to go)
Two for the show

Waiting in the wings
While the queen of virtue sings
It'll break her heart when I tell her
She's out of key

If they gave her half a chance
She could soon learn how to dance
So she could earn her living
Gracefully

One for the money
Two for the show
Three for the lady on the radio
Four might be the one
You'll never know, you'll never know
If only there was a better way to go (way to go)
Two for the show

(repeat until fade)

Another solid 1970s act from Vancouver, this band went through several name changes including Winters Green and Applejack before settling on Trooper. Vocalist Ra McGuire and guitarist Brian Smith have been with the band since 1965. After their MCA Records debut in 1975, they have charted some 24 singles; most were released in the 70s, with American Dream coming as recently as 1991. Trooper's most notable hits include We're Here For A Good Time (Not a Long Time), Raise A Little Hell and The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar.

Two For The Show, however, is one on those haunting songs that you can't easily forget. From Trooper's 1976 album of the same name, it was produced by Randy Bachman of the Guess Who. It was Bachman's intitial interest in 1974 that helped Trooper move into the spotlight...although they first had to leave his Legend label to join MCA...

Trooper won a Juno Award in 1980 for "best group". Although no longer on the charts, Trooper is still an active touring band, and is usually featured prominently on Canadian "Classic Rock" radio stations, such as Q-107. By the way - Ra McGuire is also a published author, with his 2006 book, Here For a Good Time – On the Road With Trooper, Canada's Legendary Rock Band.
