Pictures of Matchstick Men - Status Quo, 1968

When I look up to the skies
I see your eyes a funny kind of yellow
I rush home to bed I soak my head
I see your face underneath my pillow
I wake next morning tired still yawning
See your face come peaking through my window

Pictures of matchstick men and you
Mirages of matchstick men and you
All I ever see is them and you

Windows echo your reflection
When I look in their direction gone
When will this haunting stop
Your face it just wont leave me alone

Pictures of matchstick men and you
Mirages of matchstick men and you
All I ever see is them and you

You in the sky you with this guy you make men cry you lie
You in the sky you with this guy you make men cry you lie

Pictures of matchstick men....

The rock band Status Quo was formed in England in 1962 (before the Beatles) and is still going today. The band has had many personnel changes over the years; going through early name changes such as The Scorpions and Traffic Jam. Yes - these names DO sound familiar. Lead singer Francis Rossi and guitarist Alan Lancaster have stuck with the project from the beginning, enjoying a still-standing record of 60 chart hits in the U. K.

The album Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo was a brief exploration into Psychedelic Rock for the band. If you're wondering, the concept of "Matchstick Men" is thought to be a reference to the English painter, L. S. Lowry, who often did urban landscapes with numerous tiny figures. Despite continued success through the '70s and '80s, the single Pictures of Matchstick Men was their only hit in the U.S. market.

If you like this kind of music, you may also enjoy Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds by the Beatles, released in 1967...I'm guessing that more than a few bands were "experimenting" in those days.
