Don't Sleep In The Subway - Petula Clark, 1967
You wander around on your own little cloud |
In October 1942, Petula Clark made her radio debut while attending a BBC broadcast with her father. She was just a little girl, and being in the middle of World War II, she was requested to do a song to ease the tension. Well - she didn't look back after that, and is now in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the highest selling, female British solo artist of all time. Petula Clark was also awarded the CBE or Order of the British Empire. Petula's most prolific decade for music was the 1960s. She released a monster hit in 1964 called Downtown. This sold all over the world, and was recorded in French as well as English. In fact, she recorded several singles in German and French during the height of her popularity. My favourite has always been Don't Sleep in the Subway. It seemed whimsical and slightly off-beat to me, so it stuck in my head over the years. Most would assume that the subway mentioned is this song is the underground train we all love to ride... but no - it refers to underground pedestrian tunnels in London England. |
