Will The Wolf Survive? - Los Lobos, 1984

Through the chill of winter
Running across the frozen lake
Hunters are out on his trail
All odds are against him
With a family to provide for
The one thing he must keep alive
Will the wolf survive

Drifting by the roadside
Climbs each storm and aging face
Wants to make some morning's fate
Losing to the range war
He's got two strong legs to guide him
Two strong arms keep him alive
Will the wolf survive

Standing in the pouring rain
All alone in a world that's changed
Running scared, now forced to hide
In a land where he once stood with pride
But he'll find his way by the morning light

Sounds across the nation
Coming from your hearts and minds
Battered drums and old guitars
Singing songs of passion
It's the truth that they all look for
Something they must keep alive
Will the wolf survive
Will the wolf survive

Los Lobos (The Wolves) released a few Spanish language albums in the 1970s, and enjoyed modest local success in the Los Angeles area. In 1984, they released How Will The Wolf Survive?, an album featuring mostly English lyrics. It was a smash hit, and is still listed as one of the top 500 albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. The title song, Will The Wolf Survive?, although written by Los Lobos, was also covered by country star Waylon Jennings in 1986. He even named his album Will The Wolf Survive, and the single helped rejuvenate his slumping career.

Los Lobos combines the musical styles of Country, Tex-Mex, Rock & Roll and traditional Spanish/Mexican music. This made them a natural to record music for the 1987 movie La Bamba. It was a docudrama about Richard Valenzuela, better known as Ritchie Valens, a Mexican-American teen who became a 1950's superstar up until a tragic airplane crash in 1959. The song, La Bamba, was a number one hit for Los Lobos in 1988.

Although not as big as they were in the 80s, Los Lobos are going strong and still touring. Yes, the wolves have indeed, survived.
