My Male Curiosity – Kid Creole And The Coconuts, 1984
I can't deny we've had some good times |
Born in Montreal, Thomas August Darnell Browder was raised in the Bronx. Originally he was an English teacher, with a masters degree. In 1974, he helped form Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, but it wasn’t until he came up with Kid Creole and the Coconuts that he received any notoriety. The costumes worn on stage are inspired by Cab Calloway in a zoot suit, and Hollywood movies of the '30s and '40s. The music is an interesting mix of Caribbean/Latin, Big Band, Disco and Jazz, but I think it's the Coconuts, a trio of singers and dancers, that make the act so popular. By the way, one of these three ladies was Darnell's wife, Adriana Kaegi. My Male Curiosity was recorded in 1984, and featured in the movie , Against All Odds. You hear some of the clever back-talk between singer and back-ups in this song. He states: "it's been a pleasure loving you", and the ladies reply: "can't say the same to you!" One year later, Darnell and the first Coconut were divorced, although Adrianna stayed on with the band. |
