The Ghosts That Haunt Me - Crash Test Dummies, 1991

There's a skeleton in everybody's closet
I can think of one or two in my own room
But I would like to introduce them both to you
You'd shake their bony hands and so dispel the gloom

Chorus:
'Cause you're so kind I know you would not mind
You'd send away the ghosts that haunt me now
And the things I fear Just wouldn't seem so near
And when I stroll out late at night
There would be nothing rattling at my heels

There are nights when all my aching bones won't let me sleep
And demons come to plague me as I lie in bed
But I know if you were sleeping there beside me then
That you could fend them off and they would let me rest

(Chorus)

There are nights
When the wind comes howling through my old place
I have dreams
And I wake up with the sweat pouring down my face
And I wait till the morning comes

There will come a time I fear when all my days are done
And they will come collect my corpse and bury me
But I hope that you'll come over to the other side
To join me in our new life, keep me company

(Chorus)

In the mid 80s, a novelty band named Bad Brad Roberts and the St. James Rhythm Pigs made the local hot spots in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The group evolved into the Crash Test Dummies, and in 1991, they released their debut album, The Ghosts That Haunt Me. This did surprisingly well, selling over 400, 000 copies, and earning the band a Juno Award for Group of the Year.

The best known single from this release was Superman's Song, which I liked, but the single The Ghosts That Haunt Me has always been a favourite of mine. The concept of another human being who is willing to take on your demons for you gives this song special meaning. Everybody needs someone to share their deepest feelings with.

The Crash Test Dummies released several memorable singles throughout the 1990s, including Afternoons & Coffeespoons, God Shuffled His Feet and a cover of XTC's The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead. This last song was included in the movie, Dumb And Dumber. As of 2008, the band was still recording new songs.
