Your Mother Should Know - The Beatles, 1967

Let's all get up and dance to a song
that was a hit before your Mother was born
though she was born a long long time ago
your Mother should know (your Mother should)
your Mother should know

Sing it again

Let's all get up and dance to a song
that was a hit before your Mother was born
though she was born a long long time ago
your Mother should know (your Mother should)
your Mother should know

Lift up your hearts and sing me a song
that was a hit before your Mother was born
though she was born a long long time ago
your Mother should know (your Mother should)
your Mother should know

Your Mother should know (your Mother should)
Your Mother should know

Sing it again

Da da dada da da da dada dada dada da da
da dada da da
though she was born a long long time ago
your Mother should know (your Mother should)
your Mother should know

Your Mother should know (your Mother should)
your Mother should know

Your Mother should know (your Mother should)
your Mother should know

Yeah

There is no way I can do justice to these guys in a few paragraphs, and besides, they stand on their own. However, here are a few good sources of info on the Fab Four: Wikipedia, About The Beatles, On Abby Road... or just google "The Beatles" - I got 18,800,000 hits.

After Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released in Summer of Love, 1967, Paul McCartney decided to make a film about the band, using the "on the bus" analogy from Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. The idea of a Magical Mystery Tour somehow didn't work; more and more fans caught on, and dogged the bus where ever it went. Apparently, there wasn't any magic, but the movie was none-the-less released on BBC TV, and was universally panned. Apparently, Steven Spielberg quipped: "When I was in school that was a film we really took notice of...' like an art film, you know, rather than a proper film."

The soundtrack, on the other hand, was a success. Songs such as Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love all climbed the charts. Less known is Your Mother Should Know, but I included it here as it seemed to reveal something about the Beatles. It was designed to be nostalgic, but I think it also showed how Lennon and McCartney understood the power that music can have on generations to follow.

Hey - is there anybody reading this, whos mother was born after 1967?

Connections: one of the many musical acts the Beatles supported was the lovely and talented Mary Hopkin.
