I'm On Fire For You Baby - April Wine, 1974
This empty space I've held so long |
Okay, people - get out your plastic bic lighters, and wave them slowly in the air. This seems to me a perfect song to listen to while sitting on a hill, with the stage in the distance, on a warm summer's evening. If you have a cold beer in a styrofoam holder, all the better... Although groups like April Wine are probably better known for their hard hitting rock anthems, I think the slower ballads give you a better sense of the band cohesiveness. April Wine has been around since 1969, although they did take a break between 1986 to 1992, and they have earned their place in Canadian music history. Distinctive vocalist Myles Goodwyn has held the band together through numerous incarnations since its humble beginnings in Waverley, Nova Scotia. According to the band, the name has no more significance than the fact that the two words sounded good together. Success struck with You Could Have Been a Lady in 1972. The song went to #5 in Canada, and even cracked the US market at position #32. After that, the hits kept coming throughout the '70s with: Bad Side of the Moon, Lady Run Lady Hide, Tonight is a Wonderful Time to Fall in Love, Oowatanite, You Won't Dance With Me and Rock and Roll is a Vicious Game. As of today, their last album was recorded in 2006, entitled Roughly Speaking. But I don't think we've heard the last of Myles Goodwyn. I'm On Fire For You Baby holds some very strong memories for me - from the summer of 1974 perhaps... hey - where's my cold beer? |
