I'm A Train - Albert Hammond, 1974
Look at me, I'm a train on a track Look at me, I'm going somewhere
Look at me, I'm a train on a line It's been a life that's long and hard

Albert Hammond was born in London, England during the Second World War, but his family moved to Gibraltar soon after. It was there where he learned to speak Spanish, and follow his interest in music. His first band was called The Diamond Boys. But his career didn't take off until he moved to the US in the 70s, and he penned such classics as It Never Rains in Southern California, Down by the River, The Free Electric Band, and possibly I'm a Train. I picked the latter because it's a catchy pop tune with an obvious hook, and interesting harmony. As a song writer, Albert Hammond has been exceptionally prolific, providing hits for artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Joe Cocker, Chris de Burgh, Neil Diamond, Céline Dion, Chicago, Art Garfunkel, The Hollies, Whitney Houston, Julio Iglesias, Tom Jones...and more. I was most surprised to find he co-wrote The Air That I Breathe for The Hollies. Hammond also wrote, recorded and even produced Spanish songs; working behind the scenes for Julio Iglesias. As for keeping things in the family, Albert Hammond Junior is having his own musical career, playing rhythm guitar with The Strokes. |
