The Jack - AC/DC, 1976
She gave me the Queen |
Brothers Angus and Malcolm Young formed AC/DC in 1973. As you might suspect, the name is an acronym for alternating current/direct current, but they got the idea from a label on their sister Margaret's sewing machine, of all things.
Their line-up changed a few times, but settled down with lead singer Bon Scott by the time they released their first album, High Voltage. Unfortunately, Bon died in 1980 of what can only be described as heavy alcohol consumption.
The group considered disbanding, but a similar-style vocalist, Brian Johnson, stepped in. Angus Young was impressed with his audition, noting: "There's this guy up there screaming at the top of his lungs and then the next thing you know he hits the deck. He's on the floor, rolling around and screaming." As it turned out, Brian was suffering from Appendicitis, and this accounted for his antics. Later that year, AC/DC released Back in Black, their most successful album.
The Jack is off of AC/DC's 1975 debut release. According to the band, the inspiration for the song was a female groupie who shared a house with the band...well, I guess she shared more that that, and I'm pretty sure I don't need to spell out what "the jack" is slang for. Connections: the older brother's second band, Flash and the Pan. |
