In my 3rd year painting class, we were given the assignment of copying an artist of any era. I had become curious about an 18th century English artist named Richard Dadd. Mid-way through his career, Richard went insane and killed his father, believing him to be the devil. From the confines of his asylum room, Dadd painted The Fairy Feller’s Masterstroke.
I also found out that the band Queen had done a song about this particular painting, describing it with surprisingly accurate detail. You should be listening to the song right now.
So I chose the Fairy Feller's Masterstroke for my assignment. Because of the absurd amount of detail, I had bets going as to whether or not I would turn it in on time. I did. I won some beer money…but that’s beside the point. All these years later, I decided to re-visit the concept, only this time - make it into a sculpture.
